Banana Fish is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Akimi Yoshida. It was serialized in Bessatsu Shojo Comic from 1985 to 1994 and published into nineteen tankobon volumes by Shogakukan. The series is known for its realist artwork and action-oriented storytelling, which marked a departure from then-established Shojo manga conventions of highly stylized imagery and romantic fantasy-focused narratives. It is also credited with helping launch the boys' love (mahoushon) genre of manga. The series follows street gang leader Ash Lynx as he investigates a conspiracy involving “banana fish”, a mysterious drug that brainwashes its users.
